Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do

Tong Il Kwan is a style of Tang Soo Do founded by Grandmaster Alexander Maltabarov in 2000. Style represents modern interpretation of a creative heritage of Chung Do Kwan school created by Great Grandmaster Lee Won Kuk.

Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do means “The United Home (School) of Tang Soo Do”. The main idea of style is harmonious connection of martial arts traditional values with progressive technical and methodical achievements of our time in this area.

The purpose of style as martial art is formation of harmoniously developed modern person: a person, which is universally physically developed, is powerfully intellectually developed, is spiritually rich and useful to a society.

The style motto: “Traditions & Modernity!”.

There are three purposes – the main values during Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do training:

1) Self-defense.
2) Self-improvement.
3) Service to people.

As well as any style Tong Il Kwan has precise tasks:

a) Preservation of traditions and the best achievements of martial arts checked up by time.
b) Searching rational new in a technique and introduction in a practice of modern Tang Soo Do.
c) Development of physical and high moral qualities in students.
d) Formation of the harmonious comprehensively developed person useful to a society.

The students of Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do should know, understand and be guided on trainings and in a daily life the following principles:

1) We have all that we need.
2) To give time to oneself.
3) Ultimate goal.
4) Trust.
5) Respect.
6) Diligence.
7) In a group as in a family.

The basic techniques in Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do is considered in three sections:

1) The main techniques (formally and with partners).
2) Formal complexes (Hyeong).
3) Pre-arranged bouts caused by the formal complex contents (Punhae).

In Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do on a line with hand technique the big attention is given to kicks and throwing technique, that finds illustration in Hyeong.

Tong Il Kwan is connected with group of "external" styles. As is known, in the "external" styles at the initial level of training there are difficult but really feasible tasks of increase the physical, intellectual and emotional opportunities of students. There are tasks of powerful growth of an energy potential at the masters' level.

Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do has organically absorbed in itself the classical features of traditional martial arts and the modern achievements both in sports section and self-defense.

There are some features of Tong Il Kwan.

The first feature. Style demands good general functional and special physical preparation of students. The techniques used in style are well unified, that is why style is accessible to the modern person. The methodical basis of style corresponds to the basic pedagogical principles that can help at studying of material. The formal complexes (Hyeongs) illustrate it well.

The second feature. The basic dynamic principle is the principle of stable equilibrium. There is no priority of rigid and deep stances in Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do. Stances are steady, but adapted for fast movements. Fight is considered at three levels: in the rack (standing on feet), in air (in a jump) and on the ground (kneeling). All technical actions accompanied by powerful twisting movements of a hip. Any technique must be executed by a principle: from the maximal condition of all muscles relaxation to it maximal pressure in a short time interval.

The third feature. Key factors in the style are:
a) Powerful diaphragmatic ("Buddhist") breathing which activate the vital energy of an organism.
b) The timeliness of technical action.
c) The correctness of the chosen distance.
d) The maximal concentration of physical efforts in a short time interval (at performance of technical actions).
e) The skill to supervise movement of striking finiteness.
f) The insistence to correctness of protectively-attacking actions execution and movements.
j) The control of emotional condition, and the rigid self-discipline.

Through intensive and persistent trainings with high physical activities the Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do practitioner develops the diligence, strong character and the respectful attitude to people.

Punhae is a realization of Hyeong in a practice in the form of the pre-arranged bout, which can allow getting the accurate understanding of the sense of attacking and protective actions. Punhae in Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do is an independent discipline. This kind of practical activity simultaneously is a link of basic technique with Hyeong. At 9th Geup, Punhae is considered within the limits of one-step sparring and three-steps sparring. Since 8th Geup, Punhae is a student’s independent creative activity on comprehension and deep understanding of Hyeong. During Punhae demonstration is necessary to fulfill all requirements to Hyeong, but also there should be a visual realness, i.e. outwardly it should looks like a true bout.

As in any other martial arts, students are studying self-defense (Hosin Sul) and destruction of subjects (Kyeokpa) in Tong Il Kwan Tang Soo Do.

Profoundly studying of Hosin Sul begins from the initial level of masters. Training is conducted by a principle «from heart to heart».

Kyeokpa is intended for demonstration and checking of variety of qualities of readiness of the fighter: resoluteness and fighting spirit, concentration of vital energy, technique correctness, and readiness of striking finiteness.
